Tetra was founded in 1951 and is the world’s largest manufacturer of ornamental fish food.

Tetra has a tradition of innovation that started more than 50 years ago in Melle, Germany, where Dr. Ulrich Baensch founded the company (Tetra Werke). Dr Baensch pioneered the development of flake fish food. Until that time, growing and harvesting food for acquarium and pond fish was a laborious process. Fish flakes made feeding pet fish much easier and enabled more people to own an aquarium.

The biologists, chemists and nutritionists at Tetra continue to develop innovative products to help seasoned hobbyists and beginners alike to enjoy successful, aquatic experiences. Their mission is to find innovate ways to deliver the best products with sustainability in mind.

Tetra is committed to finding ways to improve sustainability:
Through research into reducing materials usage, more than 25 tons of plastic has been saved in their U.S. manufacturing facility,
Tetra’s manufacturing facility in Germany uses 100% “green” electricity sourced exclusively from plants that generate renewable energy,
All fish food cans and lids are recyclable, as are the yellow Tetra care bottles,
All food products consist of 100% renewable raw materials and do not contain material from any environmentally harmful aquaculture operations.
